The SuperSmolt Program is a breakthrough method in smoltification. It effectively eliminates the need for a growth inhibiting winter photoperiod and provides a high degree of production flexibility.
The groundbreaking technology is based on research and knowledge of the biological “master switch” controlling osmoregulation - the calcium sensing receptors. The method is widely tested and SuperSmolt is currently being used commercially in every part of the fish farming world.
The technology can be utilized in a number of ways in both S0 and S1 production. Some examples:
Produce standard size S0 earlier.
Produce more smolt due to increased freshwater and tank capasity.
Produce larger S0 – and transfer to seawater at normal S0 schedule.
Utilize more of your biomass for S0 production, as there is no need for winther photo period.
Synchronize smolt status within the fish group.
Optimize your S1 placement schedule; start earlier and / or place larger fish later.
Prevent desmoltification resulting from delayed seawater transfer by keeping the fish in the smolt window.
Skip lake or brackish water production phase and go direct to seawater.
Strategic use to prevent disease risk.
The SuperSmolt Program consists of a combination of an all-natural water treatment and special SuperSmolt feed. It is easy to implement, it requires no major investments and it is adaptable to a number of production settings.
SuperSmolt allows for a smoltification process of just 3-6 weeks with no growth inhibiting winter photo period. The result is greater productivity and increased flexibility.
Good smolt quality is an important cornerstone in successful fish farming. Traditional smoltification using different light regimes however, can in some cases compromise quality. An entire fish group will not reach smolt status at the same time and sea water transfer will therefore never be truly optimal. Some fish will almost certainly not have reached solid smolt status while other might be moving towards reversion at the moment of seawater transfer.
Given that the fish are in good condition, SuperSmolt effectively eliminates this problem and provides for a greater degree of control over the fine-tuned biological process of smoltification. The program allows the fish to stay in the smolt window, with no risk of reversion, until the entire group has reached solid smolt status. The possibility of keeping the group in the smolt window also proves valuable in situations of delayed possibilities for seawater entry.
In other words: Smolt exposed to the SuperSmolt program are ready to go when you are.
The fish health benefits of a strong and homogeneous group of smolt should not be underestimated. Strong smolt status is a key element in aiming to reach your production targets.
